How Do I Add Or View Results?

Once you have logged into STARS and are at the Home page, follow these steps to add or view results:

  • From the menu bar, click 'Achievement→Record & Display→Record Standard' or 'Achievement→Record & Display→Show'.
  • Select to see results for one pupil or for a class/Extended Group of pupils by clicking on the appropriate radio button.
  • Select the class or Extended Group of pupils (use the radio buttons to toggle between classes and groups).
  • Select the academic year that you wish to record or view results for. If you have selected a class of pupils then the field below the year drop-down will show the National Curriculum year that these pupils would have been in for the year you have chosen. For example, if you chose a current Y5 class but changed the year select to the previous year then the National Curriculum year will now show 'Y4' as this is the year the pupils would have been in.
  • Select the achievement package you wish to record or view by clicking on the package name in the 'Achievement' list. Items prefixed with '[+]' are groups of packages and clicking on them will expand the list. Clicking on '[-]' will close the package group back up.
  • Click 'Accept' to continue.
  • If you selected to view or record for a single pupil then you now need to choose an individual pupil from the class or group. Click 'Accept' once you have selected the pupil.

The selected package will now be displayed on the screen. The time taken to display the screen may vary slightly depending upon the number of items in the package and the number of pupils in the class or group. You will see the 'Loading' icon in the centre of the screen while the information is retrieved and formatted.

  • Down the left hand side of the page you will see all of the pupils that you have selected. You can click on their name to see the details held in STARS for them.
  • Each item within the package is displayed along the page and results are shown in the cells that correspond to the pupil and the item.
  • You can click on the 'DoB' or 'Name' in the 'Sort By' field (above the pupil names) to sort the pupils by name or date of birth. You can also click on the 'F/M' heading to sort the pupils by gender.
  • If you are viewing results (not recording results) you can also click on any of the package item headings to sort the columns by the results.
  • Clicking twice on a sort option reverses the sort order. NOTE: Free Text columns (columns that allow you to enter text instead of selecting a value) cannot be sorted.
  • When viewing results you will see the the quick graphing options above each package item, these options produce a graph of the results as follows:
    • Graph By Name This produces a graph showing the pupil name and the result that they achieved.
    • Percent Graph This produces a graph showing the percentage of pupils that achieved each result (for example, 25% of pupils were 'Level 2A'). This graph does not individually identify a pupil unless you hover your mouse over one of the graph bars. This style of graph is very useful when comparing cohort groups over different years when the number of pupils has changed.
    • Number Graph This graph is similar to the one above except that it shows the number of pupils instead of a percentage (for example, 6 pupils were 'Level 2A').
  • To reduce the number of columns on a page you can click on the 'Hide Column' heading above each item description. This will remove the item from the screen. Clicking on the 'Show All Columns' (above the pupil names and sort options) will redisplay all hidden items.
  • A package may have multiple 'Result Sheets' setup to allow recording of results at different times of the year. For example, you may have a package to record English spelling results three times a year. Clicking on the 'Result Sheet' drop-down will show these three sheets (for example, 'Autumn', 'Spring', 'Summer') and selecting one of the options from the drop-down will change the display.
  • Any Free Text results (these are items that allow you to enter text instead of selecting a value) will be highlighted when a value is present for a pupil. Clicking in the cell will open a new window to either allow you to enter some text if recording or to show you the text if viewing.

The following section describes how to record results for the selected pupils and package:

  • For each package on your system, STARS already knows the possible results that can be entered. To record a result simply click in the appropriate cell for the pupil and package item.
  • A new window will open next to the cell you clicked in. This will show all of the results available for the package item. Click on one of the results and the window will close and the value transferred into the cell you originally clicked.
  • Repeat the process for each result.
  • You do not need to enter all results in one go. You can come back to the package and enter more values at another time - the values you previously entered will be displayed.
  • For some package items, all pupils will start at the same level. A shortcut is available to make this process quicker:
    • Click in a result cell for a pupil and item then choose the appropriate result as above.
    • Once the result window has closed you will see the 'Arrow Down' icon.
    • Clicking on the icon will copy the selected result to all pupils for this package item.
  • To save the results that you entered you must click on 'Accept'.
  • Clicking 'Reset' will throw away any changes and set all of the results back to how they were when you first displayed the screen.
  • Clicking 'Cancel' will throw away any changes and return you to the Home page for STARS.

In some cases, you may wish to enter values rather than selecting them from a list. This is possible by selecting the 'Record - Manual' option from the menu. This process will allow you to use the keyboard to enter results instead of the 'point & click' method described above. This is especially useful for package items that have numeric values (1, 2, 3 etc) rather than text based values ('Level 2A' etc).

  • Select 'Achievement→Record & Display→Record - Manual' from the menu bar.
  • Repeat the class/Extended Group, year and package selection steps described above then click 'Accept'.
  • An extra option ('Tab Button Moves') is displayed below the package name and school year at the top of the screen. Select the direction you wish the tab button to move the cursor by clicking the appropriate radio button.
  • Click into a cell and enter the result you wish to record.
  • If you enter a value that is not valid then the cell will change to 'Red' once you try to move to another cell.
  • Use the 'TAB' button to move on to the next cell or click on the cell directly with your mouse.
  • You must correct any errors before you can save the results that you have entered.

NOTE: Ensure you click 'Accept' to save any results entered.
